RADAPTATIONS SOURCE LIST A-Z

Teams of DIY filmmakers have two weeks to create a short film adapted from a public domain work.  

Team Composition

1. There is no limit for cast and crew. Please submit a final team roster (cast and crew) upon entry submission, either via e-mail or by including a text file with your final entry. All team members must be 18+ (21+ to receive any alcohol related prizes) or have parental permission to participate. 

   1. COVID is still out there. We encourage you to be safe and considerate with regards to social distancing, wearing masks, and attending large gatherings during the creation of your film. 

Criteria

2. Films must be no shorter than one (1) minute and no longer than seven and a half (7:30) minutes. This includes opening and closing credits.  At the beginning of every film, an info card (provided by Cinemadrome) must be displayed for five (5) seconds. This means that the maximum length of any entry is seven (7) minutes and thirty-five (35) seconds long (7:35).

3. Special effects, post production and color grading are all permitted. Unlike the Swedes, all forms of computer generated effects are allowed.

4. Sound effects and music must be created by the team for the competition. All music and sound effects must be the property of the team. Sound effects packages that you own are permitted. Music must be created by a member of your team, or you must have express permission to use any music used in your film.

   1. Please avoid any content that will result in a DMCA or copyright infraction from Twitch or YouTube.  

Eligibility

5. Official signups will begin at 6:00pm on Thursday, June 1, 2023. Representatives of Cinemadrome will be at The Backyard at Boca Fiesta & Palomino. Teams can also complete a short sign-up form online.  

   1. In-Person Sign-Up: Teams will complete a short sign-up form and roll their randomized choices (see below). Once teams have their film criteria approved by Cinemadrome, they are free to begin creating their film. 

   2. Online Sign-Up: Teams will complete a short sign-up form. Once the form is completed, teams will be contacted regarding their randomized choices via e-mail. Once teams have their film criteria approved by Cinemadrome, they are free to begin creating their film. 

   3. Early Sign-Up: Teams can begin signing up Thursday, May 25, at 12:00pm. This method will follow the Online Sign-Up section (5b). Once teams have their film selection approved by Cinemadrome, they are free to begin creating their film. Signing up early gives you an extra week to create your film!

   4. Teams may sign-up via the online method any time between May 25 and June 10, 2023.  

6. To be eligible for judging, completed films must be submitted by 8:00pm on Saturday, June 17, 2023 (see below for specific turn-in guidelines) and not break any of the rules outlined in this document.  You will be notified if your film has been disqualified prior to screening. Eligible films will be screened for judging Saturday, June 24, 2023, at the Backyard and streamed live on our YouTube channel at 8pm. Films which do not meet eligible judging criteria will only be screened if time permits.  

7.  All footage must be created during the competition (May 25 through June 17, 2023).

   1. Use of public domain footage from outside of the competition timeline is permitted.

8. Awards will be given for Best In Show, Best Adapted Screenplay/Editing Outstanding Performance, Best Technical Achievement, Best Original Music or Sound Design, Audience Favorite and The Cinemadrome Lighthouse Award. 

   1. Awards chosen by an Academy not participating in the event:

      1. Best In Show. The film dubbed best overall Adaptation.

      2. Best Adapted Screenplay/Editing.  Acknowledges the team that made the best use of the source material, genre and/or editing.

      3. Outstanding Performance. Acknowledges the individuals or ensembles with the most notable acting performance.

      4. Best Technical Achievement. Acknowledges the team/film with best use of cinematography, special effects, etc.

      5. Best Original Music or Sound Design. Acknowledges the best sound effects and/or music in a Sweded film.

   2. Awards chosen by viewers of the Sweded Film Fest.

      1. Audience Favorite. Tallied vote of the audience’s favorite film.

   3. Awards chosen by us here at Cinemadrome.

      1. The Lighthouse Award. Given to a team that Cinemadrome feels deserves special recognition for their film that may have otherwise been overlooked by the audience or the academy.

   4. The 2023 Globey Awards Ceremony will take place following a second screening on Saturday, June 24, 2023! 

      1. Teams do not need to be present to win an award. However, you will need to contact us in order to claim your prizes. Any prizes not claimed or arranged to be collected after 14 days will become property of Cinemadrome.

   5. Awards are meant to add to the fun and, while we do encourage friendly competition, bullying and griefing will not be tolerated.

9. Credits must include credit to the original source material.

   1. Example: “Based on [source material] by [source material author]”

   2. Example: “Adapted from [source material] by [source material author]”

Sign-Up and Turn-In Guidelines

10. Teams will have a You-Chooz option to select either a Source Material or Genre.  Any work that is currently in the public domain is up for grabs and will be first come, first serve.  A genre list will be provided by Cinemadrome. Whichever option is chosen, the other option will be chosen at random.  Teams will randomly draw three (3) of their random option and will keep one.  

    1. Our source material list is composed mostly of written public domain works. There are several movies, stage plays and characters that are also in the public domain and may be selected.  However, certain caveats may apply:

       1. While certain films are in the public domain, their script/screenplay may not be.  This means that the footage can be used, but the screenplay cannot be adapted.

       2. Certain characters must be depicted in their public domain form.  For example, Winnie the Pooh is in the public domain, but should not be depicted in his Disney-style form.

    2. Additional draws may be purchased for a $5 donation to Cinemadrome.

    3. For example, Team Example decides that they want to You-Chooz Source Material and select “The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin” by Benjamin Franklin.  Team Example then randomly draws three (3) genres from the Genre list.  They pull German Expressionism, Film Noir and Rom-Com, but decide to go with Film Noir.  Team Example must now write an adapted screenplay of “The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin” as a Film Noir.

    4. Teams have complete freedom as to how much or little they choose to use from the original story, but there should be some semblance of it being an adapted work.

11. Movies must be submitted in the approved file format no later than 8:00pm on Saturday, June 17, 2023. Teams will be provided with an individual Google Drive link. Upload must be started by the deadline. If you would prefer to turn your film in in-person, please contact us separately to arrange a drop-off time.

    1. Approved file format. Film should be submitted in H.264/.mp4 format with a resolution of 1080p or less. The venue projector is 1080p and we stream at 1080p. 4K looks great, but it’s overkill for our purposes.

    2. We will let you know if there are any issues with your film within 48 hours of turn-in.

    3. Along with your final film, please include your final team roster and a 30-50 word description of your film. If you’re at a loss for how this should read, look at any movie on IMDb or Netflix and see its description. Feel free to ham it up to fit your film.

Other Considerations

12. By participating in this event, your team agrees not to screen your film anywhere else before June 24, 2023. Your team also allows Cinemadrome to use your film and or likeness in future advertising, promotion, merchandise, on our official YouTube page, or via re-streams, etc. You are free to do whatever you’d like with your film starting June 25, 2023, but we retain the rights to re-use it as well.

13. Since there are online sign-up and turn-in options, submissions are not limited to Gainesville, FL, where the event takes place. Any prizes will be from sponsors local to Gainesville, FL, which means you’ll have to come visit us if you’re from out of town and win something.  

14.  We reserve the right to limit the number of entries to ensure that the screening does not exceed time allocated to the event. 

15. We reserve the right to not show any submitted film that depicts hateful or offensive material.

    1. We’re not prudes, but don’t be a dick.

16.  All of these rules are subject to change.  We will be contacting you via email throughout the competition with any changes in rules and just to check in. Please confirm your email address if you have not competed in Cinemadrome before when we contact you.  If you have any questions or concerns about the rules, TALK TO US.  We are available via our Instagram account (@cinemadrome.gnv), info@cinemadrome.org, or individually, and we will do our best to get back to you in a timely manner.

Turn-In Checklist

• Completed film in H.264/.mp4 format at 1080p resolution not exceeding 7:35 in length. 

  • Credits must contain acknowledgement of adapted work.

• Final team roster. 

  • Comma separated is the preferred format.

• Film description of 30-50 words. 

  • Netflix or IMDb are good sources for the tone of a film description.

Important Dates

• Thursday, May 25, 12pm: Early Sign-Ups begin

• Thursday, June 1, 6pm: Official Sign-Ups begin at the Backyard 

• Saturday, June 10: Late sign-ups close.

• Thursday, June 17, 8:00pm: Films due.
