A "Swede" is a low-to-no budget, DIY remake of a well-known film that's handmade with creativity, heart, and often a good dose of humor. The term originates from the 2008 cult comedy Be Kind Rewind, starring Jack Black and Mos Def. In the film, the main characters accidentally erase all the tapes in a video rental store and decide to remake the movies themselves using homemade props, friends as actors, and whatever materials they can find. These quirky, low-budget versions become wildly popular in their neighborhood.
The word "Swede" comes from a scene where Jack Black’s character, Jerry, tells customers that the remade tapes are imported from Sweden to explain the wait for new releases and justify a higher rental price. "Sweding” has now become a beloved homage to filmmaking on a shoestring budget, fueled by imagination and a love for the original movies.
Gainesville's Cinemadrome hosts an annual Sweded Film Festival where local film makers compete to make the best "Swede".
